Could potentially be a hoax to boost Christian followers

I know from the moment I hit "submit" it wont take long for people to dismiss this and flame this topic.

But it hit me today that this could be some excuse or such to boost the numbers of followers in the church and to believe in the Christian religion. I can imagine this seeing that the modern world we live in is diversifying with every second and people who follow most major religions are starting to see possible flaws in texts and scriptures such as the Bible thus are leaving and discontinuing their belief.

 I could talk more but I'm interested in what people have to say

Peace.

Religion serves one purpose and one purpose only : comfort in death. It's more than natural to have uncertainty / fear of dying but if you belive you will go to a better place then death is not so scary.

On the other hand, believing that events in scriptures have actually taken place shows a weak mind. Just look @ some of the stories in the Bible. Laws of physics are thrown out the window in quite a few instances : why would only a very very few select humans in the history of mankind be able to do some of the things in the Bible, yet, no one ( ever ) has been able to accomplish any of these feats.

If you believe the events in the bible are REAL, then you are a weak minded individual. The bible is a moral code ; that's it. No event in the bible actually happened. They are stories to illustrate human nature and how we should all conduct ourselves.... that's it.

If that was the plan its backfired somewhat as it's also had some effect in increasing belief in other none Christian religions as well. Although they've latched on to the original Mayan theory that it represents the end of one cycle and the start of another rather than the final end. Extremist Christians have probably twisted it in order to support their idea of the rapture and to give credence to the concept that theirs is the only right religion and if it ends, so must the world.

Well, it's like they say..there are conspiracy theories, and to be honest I believe that the only true conspiracy is that George Bush planned 9/11, but what I really came to post is....God doesn't exist, because if he does, then he would stop all bad things happening, and plus, the Bible is all lies. It was made by a bored pensioner. (lol, ok, that was a joke, but it was made by metaphorical "gangsters". I mean, religions hate each other 0_o) The Mayan calender..that's a different story. made about 5000 years ago...it has a third part to the calendar, translated to "the long count"..started at 1st august, 5000-something BC, and ends at apparently..21st December 2012. Why didn't they continue to count? because it will be when nothing on the world will be able to add another date onto it. Let's look at this scientifically though: Thanks to galaxy alignments simulation technology, we can see where everything in our universe will be at a given date. Jupiter, (which has started a new theory...that it controls the suns gravity and flares form sunspots, is 99% true. Why? because it is obvious, if you know the facts..which would take too long to read. In other words, Jupiter has a significantly different orbit to anything else. It's centre of gravity...is OUTSIDE the sun..and it is a planet. This means that it can cause radiation to flirt out anywhere.) will apparently be aligned with the sun - and so will all the other planets, on the 21st of December 2012. Jupiter will force one planet that is in a correct position (for life to form) to fall. Slowly but surely, earth has been moving further and further to the bottom of the galaxy. This means that according to the Mayan calendar, until 21/12/12, Earth will be "above" the galaxy..along with everything else. But on this day, Earth will be directly at the side of the galaxy....and then after the day, we will see the sun from below it. The atmosphere will collapse, we will probably boil and then explode thanks to radiation...before a meteor even hits. But I said "PROBABLY"...because there is obviously a 10 million to 1 chance that a meteor will hit us..well, it WILL, if the atmosphere collapses, but we still somehow survive, then the meteor will get through because it won't be able to burn up. It will hit in the exact same crater as the one that wiped out the dinosaurs - in Mexico. This will do.....well...IMMENSE damage to the world, and then it will officially be doomsday. It HAS to be true, I mean, the Mayan Calendar was made more than 5000 years ago...and they predicted this day? Then we look at the simulator and all the planets will align? And coincidence number 2 - a meteor will pass (or hit, if this is true...) earth on the day? I'm convinced. After all, we can't live for ever, so we're screwed anyway.

By the way I'd like to just clarify as well that I'm an atheist, I don't follow any religion.

Religion fills a lot of gaps, not just fear of death. At the risk of sounding kind to religion….

What it imparts to people is a philosophy to live by. When I say a philosophy I mean your personal outlook on life and how you live it. Your philosophy of life is what gets you up in the morning, creates your relationship with the world around you, and to large degree, dictates your success in life. Religion is, among a lost of things, a canned-and-ready philosophy. It can often save you when your current philosophy has failed and you are headed to disaster in your life.

Take our esteemed admin 2012 for example. His life was pretty dark and his philosophy was self destructive and it became clear to him that he needed to change or die. He changed philosophies and pulled himself up with a renewed faith in his new beliefs. Whether the religion he adopted was right or wrong doesn’t matter. It was right for him.

There is an old saying that there is no such thing as an atheist in a foxhole. So, when you realize your life has become a foxhole and your personal philosophy has lead you into some dark s**t, you will (hopefully) look for ways to recover by adopting a new philosophy. In this respect religion can rescue you (born again) with a new enlightened, positive philosophy complete with community and centuries of teachings based on it.

For the record, I’m not an atheist. I'm a deist which means I believe in a universal architect, the Concept of Reason, and I reject religions based on books and superstitions.

I don't follow any religion, but I don't class myself as an atheist because I think that, in a way, atheism is a sort of a religion as well...that you BELIEVE that all religions are untrue...to you believe in not believing anything.

Lmao! No event in the bible actually happened? Just think about that for a second shall we? Most of the bible is just history, you can't say history never happened. Next you will be telling me world war 2 never happened lol

CarboKill,

You either are talking totally tongue in cheek or have composed on of the weakest arguments ever made by the human hand. I will give you the benefit of the doubt and assume the former.

Mate, if it wasn't for people that don't keep religion to them selfs (like you) then I would love religion. Personally I believe in God and Jesus but after that I'm an atheist. So live with it. The world isn't gonna end in 2012 and I'm not going to believe you because you FORCE me too. That's just stupid and ignorant.
