Even if you fail they should not be making such comments. It is not okay for someone to insult another just because their opinion differs. Reality check has revealed their true colors and I, for one, do not want to let them off the hook so easily. However, since the insult was directed at you and not me, I will leave it alone if you ask me to.

Once when I was 17, sitting at the base of a tall tree I sniffed something I should not have, collapsed and next thing I know I'm floating around the top of the tree looking down at my self. Visually I perceived it as pretty real but looking at it more closely there was some thing not quite right, the grass was different I could not see my face and it was the wrong type of tree. There was a sort of pins and needles feeling and the thudding of the heart seems to stop in a sort of stillness there was a buzzing or hum.

Don't know if you call it near death experience or simple carotid occlusion response. Very interesting but it only lasts a few seconds even though it seems much longer. The experience passed quickly and I regained consciousness 30 or so seconds later.

A couple of years later I discovered I was able to induce exactly the same response by temporarily occluding my carotids with my thumbs. THIS IS HIGHLY DANGEROUS YOU COULD DIE! DON'T DO IT. MORE IMPORTANTLY NEVER LET ANY ONE DO IT TO YOU. Any way it's pretty easy to achieve the white light tunnel and seeing the old dead rellos and many other random thoughts. Having experienced similar to that described by many others here my explanation is that the lack of oxygen through decreased blood flow to the head almost immediately induces the white light phenomena, the rest is a jumble of rapid visual memories which we fix on and accept immediately and build, as a discriminating functions begin to fail, mundane things take on a great significance, much the same as someone very drunk becomes more convinced simplistic answers are the answer to everything. Then very shortly later we get total system shutdown, and death. As boring as this explanation sounds I am pretty sure it is right, it does not rely on metaphysical nonsense and the experiment is repeatable if you don't kill yourself in the process.

We all want to believe in life after death, with a few exceptions, and I do actually believe in a sort of life after death, but not in the sense most talk about it here ie that some fictitious individual part of us can some how transcend past the barrier of biological death. In fact the real situation is far more marvelous.

How often have we looked at our children and commented "She has her fathers eyes" or "he has his mothers mouth" etc. There is a good reason for this. My grandmother is dead and she has been cremated and her ashes spread, but she actually lives on in a sense. Not that shes a 1920's flapper in heaven, no she lives on through her children and they through theirs. In fact my grandmother lives on through me. She is actually an entire quarter of my DNA and in my brother is a different quarter and in my sister another quarter etc. We are actually simply a biological manifestation of this really neat code.

I like to relate it to the secular principles as follows. When we bring up our children how we treat them can determine their future. Because we are always a physical part of them, we will also be actually living through their lives, but without our consciousness beyond our own lives. If we treat them badly, beat and desert them then we will be caught in the hell we have created for them, in their life time, even though we may be long dead and turned to dust. On the contrary if we treat them right and give them lots of love and support their lives will be more joyous and enlightened, and once again because we are an integral part of them it will be our heaven as well.
So when I die I turn back to dust but my children live on and carry my soul (Read DNA) with them.
