Can someone explain the importance of December 21, 2012. I hate to sound ignorant, I've just never heard the theory behind it. Thanks.

That date is the end of a cycle in the mayan calendar. Like a christian millenium. Remember when people were scared the world would end on Y2K? This is similar. When the date has passed and we're still alive someone will dig up another date to fear (and make money off).

From wikipedia at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mesoamerican_Long_Count_calendar#Significance_within_the_New_Age_movement
"For the ancient Maya, it was a huge celebration to make it to the end of a whole cycle," says Sandra Noble, executive director of the Foundation for the Advancement of Mesoamerican Studies, Inc. in Crystal River, Florida. To render December 21, 2012, as a doomsday or moment of cosmic shifting, she says, is "a complete fabrication and a chance for a lot of people to cash in."

You sound lazy, not ignorant.

There are plenty of threads for you to peruse and also the search function.

Check out my thread called "What Do You Think It All Mean?" I found a book that goes into detail about a further meaning of the Mayan end date and how it all might end up going.

Was just looking up some random stuff and came across these world maps for 2012...Was just wondering if anyone has some information on where they came from and, how bogus they seem to be.

Thank you, anonymous. Seriously though, everyone here who predicts the end of the world because a stupid calendar is ending is completely out of it. Even the Mayans themselves have said that another end of a calendar will be October 21st, 4772 (I think that's the year), so how could 2012 be the end of it all?

The king Pacal, or Pacal the Great, was a Mayan ruler, and he himself had said that he did not believe December 21st, 2012 will be the end of days. Now, just by reading this stuff, when December 21st, 2012 comes I might be worried sub-consciously, just as many people were during Y2K, but when the clock strikes 12, and it becomes the day of December 22th, and nothing happens I will smile... until another prediction is made of course...

"Bogus" <-- Yes! Exactly the right word.

Don't worry, Pandora. This place is a hangout for prophets of doom. Throughout history, these folks have worried themselves and others with predictions that never came true. Here's one (merely one, of many) pages that describe some of the many failed predictions for our (un?)timely demise: http://www.religioustolerance.org/end_wrld.htm

Those of you who believe nothing will happen on 21/12/2012 are probably more gloom and doom than the believers. Come on, where's your sense of adventure ? There's something so exciting about the possibility of Armageddon or that life will change beyond all recognition. And to be alive to witness it, what a privilege !!!

2012 does seem to have a lot of ''creditable'' people talking about that year being significant. Like top Russian scientists, the Mayans, NASA, cosmologists, and interpretations of many religious text.
