This is for all you ppl who believe that all astronauts tell the truth ie Edgar Mitchell. Well you cant believe one guy coz hes been to space and not the next now can you ! Sorry if anyone has already posted this but i just come home from work (night shift) and i,m too tired to read.

Also i forgot to mention something that i been meaning to ask, can anyone remember the group that thought they were going to be whisked away by aliens onto Hayley's comet when it passed in the 80s, well i was wondering if they are planning to be whisked off again? Is this a regular whisking off event every time a comet passes near or just a chance to get together? A drink down the pub would be nicer but admittedly less media attention would be attracted.

Hi, Dunk- it was probably the Heaven's Gate people in the US. They prepared for an "exodus" differently after they weren't "picked up" by Halley's Comet- when Hale-Bopp passed by they committed mass suicide! Apparently they thought they had to discard their "containers"- their bodies- or they wouldn't get to go. So crazy; so sad. Deianera

The firing of missiles to blow up a comet or asteroid is no longer thought to be an option. We are afraid that this would actually make things worse. Instead of having one big object coming towards earth, we would end-up with many smaller objects. The latest idea is to have a large ship fly next to the comet or asteroid and use the gravitational pull from the ship to nudge it off its path. The only problem with this solution is that we must have a lot of time to plan and create a ship that does not exist yet.

There is residual of matter which as an asteroid belt somewhere out within our Solar System, at the moment there seems to be a very big object heading our way, but the Question is , how is this asteroid/comet keep changing trajectory. Comets are responsive to the gravity of our sun, and if they come to close to earth they effect our weather patterns and if big enough can effect out rotational sped. The Earth shuddered when the tsunami hit Indonesia and slowed our rotation. If a comet is a comet it can either be a fireball and pass of be inert and just go through he throws and glow with a tail and miss us. The asteroid belt in our solar system is full of comets and some are bigger than you mind could believe. Sometime they collide with each other and break up hence they then travel in a different direction toward Earth which is the current concern. You state that there's ONE coming straight towards earth. Is that right now, at this moment? or at a certain date? Because the earth isn't a comet magnet and being that the sun is far more dense then our planet, its gravity would be the main target....not to mention that it's said to be somewhat stationary. We, on the other hand, are in a constant path revolving around the sun so our gravity should have NO effect on the path of a comet. Also, remember, we are in a 3 dimensional universe so coming STRAIGHT towards us is extremely vague. Do you mean that our planet and a comet are going to be occupying the same location in space at the exact time?

This is some of the most unadulterated crap I have ever read. A comet is a ball of dirty ice and rock which orbits a star, usually on a long-term, highly elliptical orbit. You've almost certainly seen or heard about them on the news from time to time as one passes close by the Earth and becomes visible in the sky at night (and sometimes during the day). I really love the image on the front page of this site by the way. Why on earth would a blank part of an image on Google Sky correspond to a planet? Every time astronomers find a new planet they shout from the rooftops about it as it's such an amazing discovery to make (this happened just a few days ago - see http://www.sciencenews.org/view/generic/id/35430/title/Tiny_object_points_to_remote_solar_system_reservoir - it's only a comet but still enough to get some exposure). If you're worried about some conspiracy/cover up, go get yourself a telescope (they're not expensive), and take a look for yourself. It's really not difficult, but I get the impression you'd much rather invent wild theories than actually do any such legwork.

For a start the scientists are absolutely blind to alternate possibilities of physics and have little going on between their ears other than the massaging of their IQ scores. There is a physics that says the universe is far more diverse than the broken 3D on one inflating dimension. The universe might very well exist of higher dimensions not currently recognized by those too stupid to look for other explanations outside the box. There is so much to indicate that the universe has a fractal repeating sequence and a derived complexity from a simple geometry.

You trust your government to tell the truth. Well you might be more trusting than anybody else on this planet. The books that give prophesy may very well have a link through time to describe exactly the stupidity that humanity will subject every living creature to. Not he least being a third of humanity dead through famine, a further third of those dead through disease from the rotting bodies, a further third of those dead through pestilence capable of preying upon the living and a final third of the humanity remaining die through the loss of the will to endure. Read the Bible it isn't pretty but it was written as a warning to humanity that the gate to hell would open in our time on this earth. The dead shall rise and the creatures of darkness shall have dominion over mankind. That is prophesy.

The world not corrupt enough perhaps because of art and literature. Take art then because as a youngster I though art was to inspire and reflect beauty. Art is none of that. The true purpose of art is to cut at the moral fiber of humanity to shock and create an audience able to appreciate pornography. That is the purpose of art. That is the current state of human morality. Take churches the pillars of Godly wisdom and these days they are under constant attack, why? Because they wont budge from the duty of care assigned to them ... to present the living word, unchanged and be a light for the moral development of society. So art is good is it because it corrupts and churches bad because they try to maintain morality.

There is retribution a terrible retribution as written that will fall heavily on humanity for it ways and lack of faith and it is written not just in our time but of this time from thousands of years in the past.

Exactly why is he wrong? Ed describes a comet very well and is very correct about the discovery of planets.
Has anyone looked up the co-ordinates of the section of sky "missing" from the google images in any other sky database e.g. Sloane sky survey or even on Microsoft's "Worldwide Telescope"?
I have and guess what! it's there for all to see quite plainly. THAT THERE IS NOTHING THERE OTHER THAN THE STARS and NEBULAE that we would expect to find...sorry to disappoint, no dark mysterious planet.

This is quite funny. First you call scientists blind to alternate possibilities then go and say "physics that says the universe is far more diverse than the broken 3D on one inflating dimension". I wonder where this "physics" came from...Scientists and Mathematicians maybe? What your actually talking about is super symmetry and string theory

The " You trust your government to tell the truth" argument does not wash in this day and age of information. Try doing some real research for a change instead of relying on myth's and legends.

And now you attack art and literature as a vehicle for pornography? What about St Paul's cathedral, the Taj Mahal or Leonardo Da'vinci's works : The Mona Lisa, The Last Supper. Authors like William Shakespeare, Charles Dickens. Art, Literature and Music are what you make them, NOT what they make you.

As for Literature, even the Bible is well known to have been heavily edited throughout the ages to suit the political needs of the time. Henry the 8th's revisions being a prime example which is now know as the King James Version, the version which almost all modern bibles have been based on.
